Duxford was one of the first RAF bases to be used by the USAAF and in April 1943 it was handed over to the United States Eighth Air Force. The 78th Fighter Group operated from here until 1945, being credited with the destruction of some 700 enemy aircraft.

Approximately 30,000 USAAF personnel lost their lives in operations flown from British Bases in World War 2, and the American Air Museum stands as a memorial to them. The Museum boasts the largest collection of American Aircraft outside of the USA. Pride of place goes to the B-52 Stratofortress, SR-71 Blackbird and B-17 Flying Fortress.
